I am in the New Orleans area right now and met yesterday with a group called Loss Talk, based Houma, LA. This is a fantastic idea and a fantastic group. The philosophy is to heal lives and communities through conversation. Loss Talk trains people in an affected area following a significant event like the 2010 oil spill. These individuals are trained to facilitate groups of people who need to talk about all of the issues surrounding something like this…from the emotional issues to the logistics ones…no issues is too big or too small.
Loss Talk also helps groups come together to talk about death or suicide or bankruptcy. Believing the deep down, we’re all connected and these issues all touch on one another, these groups strengthen the members and also the community, making it more resilient when future issues arise.
We are working with Loss Talk to explore ways in which we can work together to heal and mend communities.
